Engaging Youth in the Voting Process!

If you are 18 years and up and a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident, you have a right to vote. Many people and organisations believe that the voting age should be lowered to 16.

This resource encourages youth to learn about the Make it 16 debate in Aotearoa, and provides case studies about lowering the voting age around the world. It also looks at the history of voting in Aotearoa, the reasons why our vote matters, and ways for young people to take action!

Y-Vote

Join us during Youth Week 2023 as we explore the dynamic between youth voice and politics and the arguments around lowering Aotearoa’s voting age in a live online panel featuring youth, local politicians and you! Rangatahi representatives from Make it 16 and Save the Children New Zealand alongside local body politicians will debate the issues and controversy around reducing New Zealand’s voting age to 16, the merits for the change and the opposition to it. Attendees will also have an opportunity to put their own most pressing questions on this issue to the panel.
